The internationally-known blues guitarist with "true blues grit" was apparently shot in the jaw by his wife during a domestic disturbance at their South Side home on January 5, 1997. Seals is expected to recover fully.
According to Guitar World, Seals "carves guitar licks like a chainsaw through solid oak and sings like a grainy-voiced avenging angel."

Seals listened to B.B. King and Muddy Waters growing up, and then moved to Chicago in the early '70s where he worked the South Side club circuit. He inherited the weekend shows at the Expressway Lounge from Hound Dog Taylor soon after arriving from Arkansas. Bruce Iglauer of Alligator Records describes him, saying "Son didn't look like much in those days - a skinny young man straight from the South, with unkempt hair and pants that didn't reach his shoes. But he played and sang like his life depended on every note and word." His albums include The Son Seals Blues Band (1973) & Midnight Sun (1975). A new live album, Spontaneous Combustion, is available on Alligator. He also contributed a track to Alligator's Hound Dog Taylor -- A Tribute. He remains a top draw in Chicago clubs like Blues, Blues etc., and Kingston Mines, often with his band The Chicago Fire.
